After ESCMID Global in Vienna, we rolled up our sleeves and prepared our proposal for ESCMID Global 2026. And here comes the fantastic news. Our education session submitted on behalf of EAN, in collaboration with the ESCMID Study Group for Epidemiological Markers, was accepted.
2-hour Educational Session - 17 Apr 2026 - 08:30 - 10:30
Outbreak investigation: through the eyes of a field epidemiologist and public health microbiologist
Aim
Understanding and responding to infectious disease outbreaks requires an interdisciplinary approach. The ESCMID Affiliated Society EPIET Alumni Network brings together professionals trained through the ECDC Fellowship Programme in field epidemiology EPIET and public health microbiology EUPHEM.
This educational session will give participants a unique opportunity to explore the core principles of outbreak investigation through real life public health practice. Using an ECDC outbreak case study, EAN alumni will guide the audience step by step through the investigation process, highlighting the close collaboration between epidemiologists and microbiologists.
The session aims to strengthen practical understanding of outbreak response, enhance analytical thinking, and spark critical engagement with outbreak scenarios. In short, it is designed to awaken everyone’s inner “disease detective”.
